The current Chief of Police is Chief Robert Petrovich, who was sworn in as Cape Coral’s Chief of Police on October 10, 2006. He has been with the Cape Coral Police Department for more than 24 years, working his way up the ranks from a patrol and undercover officer to Deputy Chief. Prior to working in Cape Coral, Chief Petrovich worked in law enforcement as a Corrections Officer in New York State. Petrovich holds an Associate of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Edison State College, a Bachelor of Arts degree from Barry University and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Central Michigan University. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

The agency has 2 deputy chiefs. Deputy Chief B.A. (Jay) Murphy oversees the departments daily operations while Deputy Chief Bart Connelly commands the Operations Services Division.

The department was previously housed in a building located at 815 Nicholas Parkway. Officials began to express concern about the safety of the building, which was shared with the Fire Department, in 2004. In January, 2008 a referendum to construct a $110 million public safety building was rejected by voters. The proposal was cut to a $30 million project in July, 2008 and is set to open in June 2009. The new station is located at 1100 Cultural Park Boulevard S., less than a block away from the former station.

The city is divided into 3 districts, each with 5 patrol zones. The South Bureau is under the command of Captain Lisa Barnes; the Central Bureau under the command of Captain Timothy Rivers; and the North Bureau under the command of Captain Michael Torregrossa.

Under the command of Captain Michael Urraro, the department provides investigative services through the Major Crimes Unit, the Vice, Intelligence and Narcotics Unit, Property Unit, Financial Crimes unit, Forensic and Evidence units and the Crime Analyst unit.

Aside from providing a school resource officer for each elementary, middle and high school in the city , the department is a partner with the Parks and Recreation Department in operating the William "Bill" Austen Youth Center. The center, which opened in 2003, provides a variety of activities to area youths. The police department sponsors boxing, martial arts and wrestling programs at the center.

The agency also provides support to the area youth through a Juvenile Systems Liaison Specialist supports youth that become involved in the criminal justice system and through an active "Do The Right Thing" program which recognizes local youth for positive accmplishments.

The Special Operations Bureau is under the command of Captain Kurt Graf. The components of the bureau are :

The agency provides crime prevention programs and Neighborhood Watch to the city as well as a Citizen's Police Academy.

The department also participates in "Project Lifesaver", a program designed to track and locate individuals who wander and become lost, such as the elderly with Alzheimer’s or Dementia and younger residents with Down syndrome or Autism.
